Server should be SSL-aware but has no certificate configured

I am trying to set up SSL within my ubuntu 14.04 server. After generating my self-signed RSA certificate and setting up all necessary configuration, my server failed to start. I am getting this error message into my /var/log/apache2/error.log :

My /etc/apache2 directory tree :

Checking if the the default configuration is enabled :

$sudo a2ensite default-ssl.conf
Site default-ssl already enabled

The content of default-ssl.conf :

The content of ports.conf file :

The symbol link pointing to default-ssl.conf is well established :

$ls -l /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/default-ssl.conf

At the end I would like to stress that I have checked the completeness of my private key/certificate and the check does hold.

The error message has a really good hint:

Server should be SSL-aware but has no certificate configured [Hint: SSLCertificateFile]

So, what's in your SSLCertificateFile

Yep, there's nothing as it's commented out, and even if it wasn't, it seems to be only snakeoil.

Also, the SSLCertificateChainFile is not the same as SSLCertificateFile. As a matter of fact...

SSLCertificateChainFile became obsolete with version 2.4.8, when SSLCertificateFile was extended to also load intermediate CA certificates from the server certificate file.

I believe your /etc/apache2/server.crt has certificate plus chain. Simply remove Chain, i.e.

   SSLCertificateFile /etc/apache2/server.crt
