Want to change registry but what if something goes wrong or unexpected with them. To prevent this we should take backup of registry. this tutorial explain how you can take full back of registry or a single registry. Also how you can restore them if something goes wrong or you just want to change back to as it is before. this tutorial is focused on windows 10 but steps are same for other versions of windows.

On Windows, Registry is a most sensitive database that includes a collection of settings that allows Windows and apps to operate correctly and define preferences for all software including windows itself.

A single wrong modification int in its value can corrupt the OS installation. So only modify this if know what you actually modifying. 

But, in some cases we have to do this and before doing this we should take a full backup of registry or creating a full backup of PC or an individual key you want to modify. In this post we are going to learn these backup and restore steps.

You can use these steps for exporting a software configuration and use it in different computer using same windows version to get same software configuration on both system

Lets check out the steps for creating the backup and restore them when you need them as they are.

#1 How to Backup Registry Keys

Backup all Registry Keys, use the following steps:

1. Open Start or press window key + R and skip 2nd step.
2. Search for regedit and click on first result.
3. Click on File then click on Exprot.


4. Choose save location and enter file name.


5. Finally click Save button.

To back up individual Registry keys on Windows 10, use the following steps:

1. Open Start or press window key + R and skip 2nd step.
2. Search for regedit and click on first result.
3. Navigate to the location of the settings you want to backup.
4. Select the key you want to backup.
5. Click the File menu, and select the Export option.
6. Choose save location and enter file name.
7. Finally click Save button.

Quick Tip :

You can also right-click the key, and select the Export option to backup your settings. You can use any name for your file but keep the same .reg extension of file. If you want to view saved file right click on file and select edit option.


#2 How to Restore Registry Keys

What if we want our registry back same after some modification. For this we can use on backup of registry, but how.
Follow these steps to restore registry in window 10, these step can  be used for restoring on or more registry.

1. Open Start or press window key + R and skip 2nd step.
2. Search for regedit and click on first result.
3. Click the File menu, and select the Import option.


4.  Browse to the location that you're using to store the backup Registry file.
5. Select the file.


6. Click the Open button.
7. Click the OK button.


Depending on the settings you're importing, you may need to restart your computer to apply the changes.

you can use the steps outlined above to merge the settings of one computer on a different computer. Of course, assuming that the other device is running the same version of Windows 10.

While the backup will restore your previous settings and keys you may have deleted accidentally, this process will not affect additional settings and keys you may have added after creating the backup. For example, if exported a key that included a String value, and later on you changed to a DWORD value, the backup will restore the original value of the String, but it will not delete the DWORD value. If you need to remove the DWORD value as well, you have to right-click it and select the Delete option.
